You’d be best off going to school to learn business management skills and small business skills, since there is a lot of paperwork behind running a business, especially an upstart one like yours.
You need to be sure you have your taxes figured out, and keep paperwork and expenses and profits managed perfectly, because the IRS will find and pinch out any penny they can, they could squeeze blood from a rock, and they can nickel and dime you to death if you even make an honest mistake or just don’t know what you’re doing.
Afterwards, work on advertising yourself, many people are really curious about getting into a vegan or raw diet but are afraid they might not know what they are doing.
It would really help if you became a licensed nutritionist, so that your costumer base could rest assured that all their dietary needs were met. Culinary school, in your instance, is not necessary since usually they don’t teach you the skills you need to be a raw or vegan chef, unfortunately those are more unconventional palates, and you’d probably be pushed through learning how to handle and prepare meats, eggs and dairy, all of which wouldn’t be of any benefit to what you want.
You might want to find local home shows or health and fitness expo’s, they are conventions of sorts for small businesses to put out their best face forward and try to garner customers. Offer samples of your food, be vivacious and talkative, offer pamphlets that boast and extoll the virtues of a vegan or a raw vegan diet and use an eye-catching display.
Your best bet is to be smart, a real legal shark, and to know your business inside and out. Know your customer base, know where to find them, and know how to present yourself. Advertise wisely, and maybe find an investor. My friend is in the process of opening his own bar in Wisconsin and he has an investor that’s putting in close to a million dollars into the bar, and in reciprocation he’ll get a nice share of profits and be a co-owner. It might make things a lot easier, as much as you’d wish to be independent in your efforts.
More than half of new businesses fail within the first year, so you have to provide yourself a nice cushion to fall on too, so don’t quit your day job until you’re ready.
